Polson sits at the south shore of Flathead Lake in northwest Montana, tucked into a natural amphitheater between the water and the snow-capped Mission Mountains. It’s the gateway to the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi in the lower 48 — 28 miles long with 128 miles of shoreline — and a year-round basecamp for boating, sailing, kayaking, swimming, and some of the finest fishing in the state. Beyond the lake you’ll find whitewater rafting on the Flathead River, the Séliš Ksanka Qlispé Dam, the National Bison Range at Moiese, and the Ninepipe and Pablo wildlife refuges for birdwatchers. Polson also sits on the Flathead Indian Reservation, home of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, and comes alive each July for the Main Street Flathead Cherry Festival.
